3 key fears behind being on Camera
Regardless of the reason, many people are afraid of being in front of a camera. And, that’s especially true if you tell them that it’s going to be posted on the internet for everyone to see.
Here are 3 common fears that people have with going on camera that you can try to control:
1 – Fear of our image
Most of us are conscious of how we look. We worry too much about how we are going to look on screen, therefore it activates a deep-set anxiety within us that triggers our fear to be in front of the camera.
2 – Fear of how we sound
Another common fear is the outcome of the video. Some people are afraid to go in front of the camera because they are afraid of how they might sound.
3 – Fear of forgetting
Being afraid of forgetting what to say in front of a camera is another biggie.
If you can resonate with these fears, then you most likely have a fear but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be fixed. Here are some tips on how you can get it under control.
How to overcome your fear
Keep it simple and direct to the point
When you try to make things complicated, it will just make things harder on yourself. There is nothing more overwhelming than having a wad full of notes beside you to read from.
Try to break down what you’re going to say into bullet points to make it easier to recall. The simpler your notes are, the better and more natural the flow will be.
Speak from the heart
Try to imagine talking in front of a mirror. Forget about the camera and focus on something else while you are talking.
If you know what you are going to talk about by heart, then it should be easy for you to talk about it.
The trick here is not to memorize anything, but be passionate about what you want to share with the world. This will make it more comfortable to talk about anything and at the same time get rid of your fear.
Try to maintain eye contact with the camera
This is one of the most important parts of vlogging.
It might be scary, but you need to learn how to do it. If you can’t just yet, try to imagine yourself talking to a person or a group, that way it won’t seem like you are in front of the camera but instead talking to a good friend.
Don’t be so hard on yourself
No one will get this right the first time. It’s okay to make mistakes and mess up a couple of times.
Don’t aim for perfection, because regardless of the mistakes you make, that can still be fixed in the post-production phase of your video.
Instead, focus on getting everything you need to say out properly, this will take your mind of your fear.
